Bring Back the Guberif

The Guberif (firebug spelled backwards) made his first appearance in Idaho back in 1945. Since then, he has started careless fires due to his care-free nature. He enjoys the outdoors, but he hasn't spent enough time with Smokey Bear to be educated on wildfires. You name the cause of a wildfire, and he is the culprit. He tosses his cigarettes on the ground, he lets his fires get out of control, he uses illegal fireworks--and those are just a few of his bad habits.

As part of the Keep Idaho Green campaign, Idaho Department of Lands painted "Don't You Be A Guberif" on highways and at rest stops and State Park parking lots. The Guberif also appeared in the media and on educational materials. He was very popular due to his name alone, but he was also very effective at bringing attention to the fire dangers that are present in Idaho.

The Guberif has been missing in action for nearly 10 years, but the threat of wildfire still exists. Keep Idaho Green and Idaho Firewise are considering bringing the Guberif back to life to help educate people on wildfire. Of course, the rebirth of the Guberif would not be complete without a makeover...a more modern and polished look (yet to be revealed!).

ABSOLUTELY KEEP HIM. I was on a Dept. of Public Lands crew for two summers in the 1970's when we went all over Idaho painting KEEP IDAHO GREEN and DON'T BE A GUBERIF on State highways. What a great summer job and a great way to keep awareness up.

Yes, I miss the "Don't be a Guberif" message on Hwy 41 between Rathdrum and Spirit Lake in Kootenai County.

Yes, bring back the "Guberif"!
In the early 70's my folks lived next door (Coeur d'Alene area) to a man known around the community as "Truk" Trzkowski. He was a Professional photographer and former Idaho Vandal football player. I recall that he claimed that he was the person who actually coined the phrase "Don't be a guberif" for the Department of Lands. Can anyone verify this?

Yes! Richard Trzuskowski came up with the Guberif in 1950 while working for Idaho Department of Lands.

I think that this is still applicable.
This is so cool........and I was impressed in the mid-70's as I embarked to work for the US Forest Service on the Nez Perce National Forest and the Clearwater and the Panhandle NF.
Now I live surrounded by the Deschutes NF in Central Oregon - married to a District Fire Chief and we are using the slogan on the Fire Station Reader Board.
2015 is a hot and dry summer following a winter lacking snowpak in the Cascades.

Be Smart........be SAFE and please don't be a GUBERIF ! .........It gets traction again.

Thank you for your attention.
